John Hancock Release 3.0A README.DOC
-----------------------------------
John Hancock release 3.0A consists of four distribution files:
JH3A1OF4.ZIP Programs & installation files
JH3A2OF4.ZIP Documentation files
JH3A3OF4.ZIP Show files
JH3A4OF4.ZIP Optional VU and SETPATH utilities
This same README.DOC file is found in all four JH3 distribution
.ZIPs; each JH3 distribution file itself contains a JH3A?OF4.DOC
file which further describes the contents of the file.
For compatibility with PCBoard 14.5 and other Bulletin Board
software which support this feature, each distribution file
contains its own BBS download directory file description in
FILE_ID.DIZ.
If you do not have all four files, your JH3 package is not
complete. You may download the distribution files from these
Official JH3 Distribution Sites:
Central & Home of JH3: Cheers (814) 539-6648 (Johnstown, PA)
East / NorthEast: The Executive Network (914) 667-4567 (NY)
South/South Central: The Lunatic Fringe (214) 422-2936 (TX)
West: MotherBoard (707) 778-8841 (CA)
FIDO: PC-Consulting Agency (602)885-4004 (AZ)
Fido node: 1:200/21 (FREQ Magic name: JH)
All above BBS feature USR HST 1440 & v.32 modem compatibility.
Registered JH3 Users
--------------------
If you have already registered JH 3.0 and wish to upgrade to
version 3.0A, DO NOT RE-INSTALL JH3. You need to do only
the following:
1. Replace your copy of JH3.EXE with the JH3.EXE file from the
JH3A1OF4.ZIP archive.
2. Extract the new JH3AUTO.EXE program from the JH3A1OF4.ZIP
archive into your JH3 directory.
3. Extract and read the WHATSNEW.DOC file in JH3A1OF4.ZIP. It
describes the changes to JH3A and gives a brief description
of the new JH3AUTO program.
4. Extract JH3AUTO.TXT from the JH3A2OF4.ZIP archive. It contains
the documentation for the JH3AUTO program.
New JH3 Users - UnZIPping the distribution files
------------------------------------------------
Although temptation may be difficult to resist, I strongly advise
against attempting to get JH3 running without first reading the
instructions; your chances of success are between zero and none if
you try to 'wing it'.
Instead, I recommend that you go through the following steps:
1. Create a new JH3 directory on your hard disk. UnZIP the
JH3A1OF4.ZIP distribution file into that new directory. The JH3
directory will contain all the files necessary to run JH3, but
YOU MUST GO THROUGH THE PROGRAM INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION
STEPS BEFORE JH3 WILL OPERATE (see "Authentic distribution
files" below for important information).
2. Create a new JH3DOCS directory on your hard disk. UnZIP the
JH3A2OF4.ZIP distribution file into that new directory. The
JH3DOCS directory now contains JH3's documentation (.TXT)
files.
3. Create a new JH3SHOW directory on your hard disk. UnZIP the
JH3A3OF4.ZIP distribution file into that new directory. The
JH3SHOW directory now contains JH3's show files.
4. The JH3A4OF4 distribution file contains the following
optional programs:
- VU.COM and VU.TXT, the documentation file viewer and its
documentation, and
- SETPATH and SETPATH.TXT, a utility which helps you overcome
the DOS PATH command limitation and its documentation.
These utilities may not be needed if you already have a file
viewer such as LIST, and if your PATH command can accommodate
one more directory. If you decide to use one or both programs,
unZIP JH3A4OF4.ZIP into a directory which already is in your
DOS PATH.
5. View the JH3 screen shows. Make JH3SHOW the current directory,
and type SHOW2 at the DOS prompt to start the show program:
C:\JH3SHOW>SHOW2 <Enter>
You should view the JH3 Installation show first, after which
you may continue with your own JH3 installation -- you can
view the JH3 and BONUS shows later.
6. Print the documentation. The .TXT documentation files are
formatted so that they can be copied directly to your printer
(your printer must be able to recognize the formfeed command
which advances the paper to the top of the next page). Print
the INSTALL.TXT file first:
C:\JH3DOCS>COPY INSTALL.TXT LPT1:
If you do not have a printer, use your file viewer or the VU
utility to read the INSTALL.TXT file.
7. Go ahead and install JH3. The whole process, including
configuring your mail reader, should take no more than 15
minutes.
8. View the JH3 and BONUS shows, and enjoy JH3.
9. If you like the programs and you use them, register them --
view the BONUS show again to see the large quantities of
exciting goodies you get when you do register. The JH3
bonus progams are *not* sold in stores.
Authentic distribution files
----------------------------
Note that all original distribution files carry the Silicon Frog's
Authencity Verification (-AV) stamp. When PKUNZIP finishes
uncompressing the distribution files, it should display the
following message:
Authentic files verified! #VDK942 The Silicon Frog
Also, all Silicon Frog distribution files contains the same .ZIP
comment, displayed by PKUNZIP when it starts uncompressing the
files:
Original Silicon Frog JH3A Distribution File
Many Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) scan .ZIP files for potential
viruses before making the files available for download. As part of
this process, some BBS may change the .ZIP comment and/or add their
own "BBS-Ad" files to the .ZIP. Such a process destroys the
integrity of the distribution files since they now contain data
which was not put there by the author. Some BBS also replace the
original -AV stamp with their own. If your JH3 distribution files
do not contain the original ZIP comment and Authenticity stamp,
they are not original files.
As an additional precaution, all JH release 3.0A files are dated
February 1, 1993 and time-stamped 03:01. If some of your JH3 files do
not carry the correct date and/or time stamp, these files have been
altered by unauthorized persons.
For ultimate peace of mind, consider downloading original JH3 files
from one of the authorized distribution sites mentioned at the
beginning of this document.
Support
-------
JH3 support will be provided in the ILink BBS Network's SillyFrog
conference. At the time of JH3's release, we were investigating
the possibility of echoing the conference on otherBBS networks.
The conference originates on Cheers, Home of all Silicon Frog
products. You may reach me on Cheers' main board at (814) 539-6648
(2400-19200 N-8-1, USR HST- and v.32-capable). Registered users
will be given the Silicon Frog's private support telephone number,
of course.
Registration
------------
JH3 is user-supported software. If you use the program beyond a
30-day evaluation period, you should register it. If you have used
JH3 for 30 days and 250 times or more, the program will start
reminding you that, maybe, you ought to register it. See the
REGISTER.TXT file for information on registering the program and
the FANTASTIC!!! bonuses you receive when you do.
As usual, Thank you for your support.
